Purpose

The purpose for which the corporation is formed is exclusively educational, including the promotion of interest and knowledge of the techniques and art of quilting, encouraging a high standard of design and technique in all of quilting's various forms and to further the development and appreciation of quilting.

About Us

We meet at the Camdenton United Methodist Church located on the south side of Hwy 54 just west of the Hwy 5 and Hwy 54 intersection. The street address is 340 W US Hwy 54.

The Cabin Fever Quilters Guild mailing address is: P.O. Box 839 Camdenton, MO 65020.

We meet at 10:00 a.m. on the 2nd Thursday of the month for a business meeting and on the 4th Thursday of the month we start with a short business meeting before our workshop. At
the workshops we either have something special we are working on or have someone come in to teach us a technique.

Snow Rules: If the Camdenton School District cancels school due to inclement weather, then Quilt Guild is also canceled. Listen to your local radio station.

We voted to have only one meeting a month in January and February due to so many members being gone and due to the weather. We will only meet on the 4th Thursdays of those 2 months for a workshop.
Dues are $16.00 a year.
Our year starts in September. Dues are for the use of the church and it’s utilities and $1.00 goes towards postage for our newsletters. We publish a newsletter once each quarter.

Officers for 2008 - 2010: President Nancy, VP Carri, Co-Secretaries Pat and Sharon, Treasurer Linda, Member at Large Rita, Librarian Barbara, and Webmaster Karen.

Current Community Projects:

Charity Quilts -- 2009 and 2010

We will participate in the 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge - patterns and sizes can be found at - http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/millionpillowcases/

We will donate 5 quilts to a mid-Missouri Veterans group - due by September 2010

We work on quilt tops for the Quilts of Valor Foundation during our unplanned workshops.

2008 - We completed 50 lap size quilts in 2008 for donation to Windsor Nursing Home in Camdenton. There were enough quilts for all the residents so they were presented as Christmas presents. We understand all the residents were really surprised and some even shed a few tears.

Recipe Book Project

Ann compiled and printed (paper & CD) of all the recipes she has received so far. Thank You, Ann!
We have lots of Dessert recipes, but are still in need of more recipes in all the other categories - Appetizers, Breads, Salads, Soups, Side Dishes, and Entrees.

Please bring additional recipes to a meeting or click here to e-mail them to Karen.

Past Community Projects:

  • Lap size quilts and wheelchair caddies were donated to Windsor Nursing Home in Camdenton on September 13, 2007. Photos
  • Last fall (2006) we worked on Tracy's Quilt for a hospice home (in memory of Tracy Carroll of Community Christian Church). We have Barbara to thank for putting on the borders and the binding!
  • Margaret gave a presentation of some quilting projects for the Head Start program on July 27, 2006.
  • We have donated several Baby Quilts to the CADV organization. They were delighted to receive them and would appreciate more.
  • Our guild has contributed at least 2 quilts to help Habitat for Humanity.
  • We raffled off a quilt and gave a donation of $300 to the Salvation Army.
  • We taught Camdenton elementary school students crayon art techniques in the spring of 2004.
  • June 24th, 2004 we helped 24 Girl Scouts learn how to hand quilt.
  • We have donated our Lily quilt to Helping Hands. They raffled off the quilt for a money raising project. They were very happy to receive the quilt.

Library:

We have added Ruth McDowell's new book on curved piecing to our library. The title is "Piecing Workshop". (The curved piecing book Ann Steffen used in her Free Style Piecing class this past May is now out of print.)

Our library is well supplied with books on every subject pertaining to quilting. There are books on strip quilting, patchwork, miniature quilts, how to hand and machine quilt and sewing and quilting apparel. We also have some patterns and several videos. Every member is entitled to check out these books for one month and then return them.
We also have a good reference system breaking the books down by category, author, name of book, & number of book so it's easy to find what you want.

2010 Field Trips:

March 26 & 27: It's A Gatherin' in Stover, Mo

June 10 - 12: Shop Hop

Past Field Trips

Member Recipes:

Banana Nut Bread
3/4 cup sugar (or splenda)
½ cup applesauce
1 egg & 1 egg substitute (1 tablespoon ground flax seed & 3 tablespoons water)
3 mashed bananas
3 tablespoons sour cream
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups flour (1 white, 1 ground oatmeal)
¼ tsp salt
½ cup black walnuts chopped

Mix well - Bake in loaf pan - 350 degrees for 1 hour

Cheese Soup
6 cups of chopped potatoes
2 cups water
1 cup celery slices
1 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 chicken bouillon cubes
1 tsp salt
pepper to taste
2 tsp parsley flakes
3 cups of milk
4 Tbs. flour
1 lb. Velveeta cheese cubed

In large pan, combine potatoes, water, celery, carrots, onion, parsley,  bouillon cubes and seasonings.  Mix well, cover, and simmer 15-20 minutes or until veggies are tender.  Gradually add milk to flour, mixing well.  Add milk mixture to veggies and cook until thickened.  Add Cheese, stir until melted.

Pineapple Delight

1 small can crushed pineapple with juice
1 small pkg instant vanilla pudding
Mix these in a medium size bowl and add -
8 oz sour cream (I used lite sour cream and it was fine)
1 small can mandarin oranges, drained
Put into a 9" Graham Cracker crust
At this point you could sprinkle with chopped nuts, coconut,
or whatever feels good or nothing.
Top pie with small container of cool whip (I used lite cool whip)
Refrigerate for a few hours and enjoy.

Bunny Salad

(This is a recipe that a small child can make. Great for Easter, a birthday or garden party, or just for dinner)

1 half of a pear (for the body - canned fruit works easiest)
1 lettuce leaf (for the grass)
1 large Tablespoon of cottage cheese (for the tail)
2 raisins (for the eyes)
1/2 maraschino cherry (for the nose)
2 slivered or sliced almonds (for the ears)
Place the lettuce leaf on a small plate or dish - next place the cut side of the pear down on the lettuce leaf. Place the two almond slivers on the top of the small end of the pear for the ears, followed by the cherry nose and raisin eyes. Place the cottage cheese at the large end of the pear to resemble a tail.

Beer Batter Mix

(Great for fish, hot dogs, crisp vegetables, etc. Tastes just like Long John Silvers fish!)

1 Can beer (any brand seems to work - however, I have never used a dark beer)
Boxed Pancake Mix (any brand works)
Pour pancake mix into the beer in a medium sized bowl (use as much as needed to make desired thickness). Make into a fairly thick batter (a thick paste will make a thicker coating or extra crispy coating). Dip fish or vegetables to coat. Deep fat fry or fry in a frying pan with about 1/2 inch of very hot oil. When pan frying - be sure to turn often to cook all sides. Cook until golden brown.

Cheesy Chicken & Rice Casserole

1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 1/3 cups water
3/4 cups uncooked long-grain white rice
2 cups frozen mixed vegetables (small pkg)
1/2 tsp onion powder
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

1. Stir the soup, water, rice, vegetables and onion powder in a 12 x 8 shallow baking dish.
2. Top with chicken. Season chicken as desired. Cover
3. Bake at 375 for 45 minutes or until done.
Top with cheese and bake 5 minutes to melt cheese.
Serves 4

Note: Recipe can be cut in half for 2. I use only one of the cans of soup. Sometimes I make all of the rice/veg mixture and only cook what meat we will eat.

Tortilla Pie

1 lb. Hamburger
1 small can green chilies
3/4 cup Salsa (use your favorite)
1 small onion, chopped
8 oz. sour cream
grated cheddar cheese
sliced black olives
8 flour tortillas

Brown hamburger and drain the fat. Add green chilies and salsa. Can add taco seasoning if you want (about 2 tsp.)
In a pie plate layer as follows: (Pie plate does not have to be greased.)
1 Tortilla
About 2 tablespoons of hamburger mixture spread around the tortilla, sprinkle of onion, sour cream (about 2-3 teaspoons), sprinkle of cheddar cheese and olives. Use each ingredient sparingly since you have multiple layers to cover.
Repeat for about 4-6 layers or whenever you run out of ingredients. As I start each layer I gently hand press the tortilla to compress the stack.
Bake 25 minutes in a 350 oven. Slice as you would a piece of pie and enjoy.
I usually serve with a salad, Spanish rice or red rice and beans. Whatever tickles your fancy.
-Diana

Oven Fries
5 Potatoes
1 stick of butter
1 cup of flour
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese

Melt butter in a 9 x 12 pan in 350 deg oven. Peel potatoes and quarter - twice lengthwise (eighths lengthwise). Combine flour and Parmesan cheese in a small bag, add potatoes, and shake to coat. Place coated potatoes in pan of melted butter. Optional - add minced garlic.
Bake 350 deg for 30 to 45 minutes.Yum

Quilting Tips:

Recipe for removing brown spots from quilts / old items:

1 cup liquid Cascade dishwashing soap
1/4 cup Clorox II liquid
1 Gallon HOT water
Mix well & let cool to lukewarm.
Soak quilt top in mix for 3 - 4 hours, turning frequently.

An appliqué tip for small pieces that worked for me was to print out my templates on laser labels, then cut out the templates (leaves) and stick them onto the right side of the fabric and cut out the fabric a scant 1/4 inch away from the label. I needle-turn appliquéd the leaves to the fabric by turning under the seam allowance just to the edge of the template. The label eliminates tracing around all your pieces, no pencil marks to get rid of, helps keep your pieces flat, and you can include your color info or placement info right on the labels.

Keep on hand three shades of gray - light, medium and dark. It works for appliqué (silk or cotton) and it works great for piecing too.

When making a baby quilt as a gift, save the scraps. Purchase a color-coordinating stuffed animal, then use the scraps to make a miniature matching quilt for the stuffed animal. Stitch the stuffed animal's hands together so it can "hold" the quilt.

Threading your sewing machine -- if the thread is on the spool in a figure 8 fashion, it needs to come off the top of the spool, so a vertical spindle works well.
If the thread is stacked on the spool (i.e. Dual Duty), it needs to come off the side of the spool, so a horizontal spindle works well, or you can place your thread cap on a vertical spindle about half way
down, set your spool on it and feed the thread directly from the spool to the top of your machine.

Safely discard your old needles in a prescription bottle that has a small whole poked into the lid of the bottle.

Make your own spray starch -- add 4 tablespoons of liquid starch to 1 quart of water, bring to a boil then take off burner and allow to cool. Then add 2 more cups of water, mix and store in your refrigerator.

Take the yellow out of an old quilt - soak it in a mixture of 1 gallon of water, 1 quart of buttermilk and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Pour this mixture in your washing machine and dunk quilt to make sure all of it is wet. Let soak until quilt is whitened, fill washer with water and rinse on gentle cycle, then run through a gentle wash cycle.

Clean the bottom of your iron -- run a hot iron over a layer of salt sprinkled on a piece of brown paper. Another suggestion is to iron over a dryer sheet.

Pin a piece of batting to your shirt while sewing - you can slap all your snipped threads to it and you don't have to sweep up or vacuum near as much.

Tulle for Quilt Marking:
Mark the design with a permanent marker on the tulle. Lay the tulle over the quilt and trace the lines with your preferred quilt marker (chalk, soapstone, etc.) The mark will go through the holes in the tulle onto the quilt and your tulle pattern can be used again and again.
